With Maggie Pierce now gone, fans are wondering if her ex, Winston Ndugu, will leave Grey Sloan Memorial as well. Is Winston Ndugu leaving Grey’s Anatomy? Keep reading to find out.

Grey’s Anatomy is ABC’s medical drama following the personal and professional lives of interns, residents and attending surgeons at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show debuted in 2005 and spawned the spin-off Station 19. It has received over 38 Primetime Emmy nominations and is currently on its 20th season.

Winston Ndugu (played by Anthony Hill), a cardiothoracic attending, was first introduced during Season 16 as a love interest for Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary). He worked under Maggie while completing his residency at Tufts in Boston and always had a crush on her. They reconnected years later at a medical conference and went on to get married. The couple began having marital issues in Season 19 and struggled to separate their work from their personal lives. Maggie eventually got a job opportunity in Chicago and decided to take it, splitting with Winston in the process.

“She makes that choice seemingly in anger or feeling fed up,” McCreary told People of Maggie’s decision to move. “But I think it was a long time coming in terms of the fact that ultimately this question of Maggie and Winston being compatible, the way that it came up at the end of season 18, whether their values and desires were compatible, that has been a question that we’ve been building out this whole season.”

The actress added the former couple still care for each other despite their breakup. “[Maggie] does love Winston, and Winston loves her and they’ve been at odds, but there is a lot of love there,” McCreary said.

Now that his ex-wife has left, fans are curious to see if Winston will stick around. The doctor relocated to Seattle for Maggie, so he no longer has ties to the city — perhaps he’ll move to Chicago to try to win her back. Read on to see what the future holds for Winston Ndugu on Grey’s Anatomy.

Is Winston Ndugu leaving Grey’s Anatomy? Not anytime soon! Anthony Hill is returning to the series in Season 20 as Dr. Winston Ndugu, and he’s got a brand new job. Winston is now the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, succeeding Maggie.

While it might be a little weird having Winston around without Maggie, we’re looking forward to seeing a new side of the doctor and getting to know him outside of his relationship. As for what his love life will look like this season, co-showrunner Meg Marini revealed that Winston is “is definitely single” but not looking for a new relationship just yet. “He’s also the new chief of cardio,” Marinis told TVLine. “His career and kind of getting out of the shadow of Maggie Pierce is something that has been a long time in coming.”

She continued: “When we see him in the first part of the season, we’re going to see how he takes this career opportunity and how it changes him … He’s not going to waste this opportunity.” Based on this information, we suspect that Winston will stay in Seattle for at least the first half of the season, and we don’t have much hope for him and Maggie reconciling.

Fans are also rallying around the new head of cardio and hoping he’ll have a bigger story arc this season. “I hate watching Winston get dunked on. He deserves so much better, truly,” one fan wrote in a Reddit thread. Another commented: “Winston is a brilliant surgeon and a wonderful person to boot. I hope he stays on the show and is recognized for the amazing person/surgeon that he is.”

Grey’s Anatomy premieres on ABC on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 9/8c and streams on Hulu.
