Dawn Michelle Staley is an esteemed member of the American Basketball Hall of Fame and the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks. She is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, having obtained gold with Team USA as a player and then as the head coach of another triumphant U.S. squad.

Career
In 1991 and 1992, she was honored as the ACC Female Athlete of the Year and the National Player of the Year. After graduating in 1994-5, Staley went on to compete in professional basketball in France, Tarbes, Italy, Brazil, and Spain and eventually joined the ABL and the WNBA.
In 1996, Dawn Staley joined the Richmond Rage of the American Basketball League (ABL) and led the team all the way to the ABL championship game in 1997. Subsequently, the club was moved to Philadelphia, which was Staley’s hometown. Staley was also part of Team USA during her career.
In 1994, Dawn was bestowed with the USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year award for her performance at the World Championships. Subsequently, she steered the 1996 team to become undefeated in sixty games, culminating in a gold medal triumph at the Atlanta Olympics.
After her gold medal win as part of the Olympic squad in 2000, Staley was hired to take the helm of Temple University’s women’s basketball program. In her inaugural season (2000-01), the team achieved NCAA Tournament qualification.
On May 7, 2008, Temple University declared that Dawn Staley was leaving to take the newly available coaching job at the University of South Carolina after her teams had won the Atlantic 10 tournament in 2001, 2002, and 2004, and had qualified for the NCAA tournament.
She concluded her collegiate career at Temple with a remarkable record of 172-80, six NCAA appearances, and four Atlantic 10 titles.
Staley was an assistant coach for Team USA under Anne Donovan at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and her help resulted in a fourth successive gold medal in women’s basketball and the sixth gold in the past seven Olympic Games.
Due to the various surgeries she has had on her knee during her basketball career, she was unable to play in several games and ultimately had to quit. She has publicly stated that people used to laugh at her limp until she explained that it was caused by the medical procedures she had undergone.
