Sarah Boone achieved notoriety after being accused of suffocating her partner by trapping him in a suitcase. What had originally been intended as a romantic game of hide-and-seek turned into one of the most strange homicides in history.
On February 24, 2020, Sarah Boone, an American citizen, is believed to have ended the life of Jorge Torres Jr, who was 42 years old, by asphyxiating him inside a suitcase in Winter Park, Florida.
It could be argued that their relationship was highly unstable, and it was eventually unveiled that Torres had been accused of domestic assault, with one occasion resulting in Boone being apprehended for a similar offense against Torres.
Before his unfortunate death, Torres had been detained on numerous occasions due to accusations of domestic violence against Boone. Reportedly, Boone provided financial assistance to secure his release each time.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Boone was taken into custody in July of 2018 after being charged with battery by strangulation against Torres.
On February 25, 2020, Boone contacted 9-1-1 to report that her boyfriend, Torres, had passed away. She informed the Orange County deputies that the two of them had shared a bottle of wine before deciding to play a game of hide-and-seek.
Boone recalled that they had both found it amusing for him to hide in the suitcase. She mentioned that she had gone upstairs and “passed out” in her bed, leaving Torres in the suitcase. When she stirred, she discovered her partner had died while inside the suitcase.
However, it was ultimately determined that Torres died due to a homicide, a video found on Boone’s iPhone revealed him trapped in a suitcase, obviously pleading to be released. In addition, the video also showed Boone tormenting him repeatedly.
Torres was heard in the video calling for help,
“Sarah, I can’t breathe, babe”
To which she responded,
“That’s on you”
He cried again,
“Sarah, I can’t breathe”
Boone responded, laughing,
“That’s on you”
She also added,
“For everything you’ve done to me, fuck you! Stupid.”
When Torres yelled her name, she answered back,
“That’s my name, don’t wear it out!”
On February 25th, 2022, Sarah Boone visited the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and was questioned by the detectives for a period of two hours. During the interrogation, Boone was asked to view the video she had previously taped.
After viewing it for a short time, she expressed that she wasn’t keen on seeing any more of it. She stated that she was convinced Torres could escape, asserting that the bag could be opened from the inside.
The detectives were not convinced by what she said, and they declared that they had not seen Torres’ fingers sticking out of the suitcase.
One of the detectives said to her,
“In the video, you can’t see any holes. There’s nowhere in that where the zipper separation (that) you can see a hole. If there’s a hole, he’s pushing on it begging you to get out. We should probably see that hole.”
Another detective added,
“He essentially would have been able to get out.”
Sarah Boone responded to the detectives saying,
“I did not zip it all the way. I did not zip it up all the way. This is horrific, OK? Horrific. Horrific. I don’t think I’ll ever be right because of this.”
She added,
“It was not intentional. I’ll put my hand on the Bible. It was not intentional. I would not do that to him nor anyone else.”
A detective quipped,
“But you did.”
Sarah replied that it wasn’t on purpose and that she had assumed Torres would eventually get out.
Sarah Boone was apprehended and indicted for second-degree homicide. She is presently in custody at Orange County Jail without bond. She has composed numerous correspondences to the court judge, arguing that she has not been dealt with equitably.
FOX35 Orlando reported that her trial has been delayed until October 2nd, 2023. Before that date, two more hearings are required. The first, for the 17th of September, is to decide if an expert should be approved and paid for. The other is Boone’s pre-trial hearing which will also take place in September.
Sarah Boone’s trial is anticipated to include the battered woman defense – a plea that women can make when they feel they have no other choice but to take the life of their abuser in order to escape a deadly situation.
