Cleaning your laundry room is a lot of work. Make it easier by keeping it clean and avoiding a major cleanup altogether.

Clean the walls

Lint from your dryer builds on your walls, eventually making a sticky, fuzzy mess that can be a pain to remove. Stay on top of it by using a long-handled duster or dust mop on your walls every time you sweep the floors in that room.

Wipe down your washer

Detergent and softener spills can build up on the outside of your washer and dryer pretty quickly. Once a week, use a damp towel to give both machines a quick wipe down. Do it right before you wash a load of towels so you can just throw it in with the rest of that load.

Wash your washer

Detergents and grime build up inside your washing machine just like the inside of any other appliance. Once a month, run your washing machine on its hottest cycle while it’s empty and use white vinegar instead of detergent.

Clean your softener dispenser

If your washing machine has a fabric softener dispenser, chances are it’s pretty gross. Softener tends to build up in these pretty quickly, so they should be cleaned at least once a month to prevent too much build-up. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular machine, though most can just be removed and rinsed with hot water.

Crack the door

Leave your washing machine door open for at least a few hours after you’ve used it. This helps it dry out completely and prevents mold and mildew, as well as nasty smells.

Remove your lint

Clean your lint trap after every load of laundry. This will not only help your dryer work more efficiently and put you at less risk of fire, but it will also prevent lint from being spread around your room and creating a dusty coating on everything. Keep a trashcan near the dryer for easy lint disposal.

Tip

Clean out your dryer vent every six months to keep your dryer running efficiently and protect your home from fires.
