Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas will be making a trip to Johnstown next month to watch the Tomahawks play, the team announced.
“Bob called like any regular Tomahawks fan would. He said he wanted to come to our game, tour the arena and show his son where he got his start," said Tomahawks' Director of Ticketing Brandon Shaffer. "It was a cool phone call to get," he added.
The team says Costas' visit is part of the organization's larger plan to honor the "heritage and history" of hockey in Johnstown.
“Hockey has been here for 70 plus years now. We are simply borrowing it and trying to write our own piece of that history”, local minority owner Craig Saylor said. “The history of hockey in our town is strong and it is important for us to honor that.”
Costas, as 28-time Emmy Award winner and longtime NBC Sports broadcaster, will visit Johnstown on February 2 and 3rd, when the Tomahawks take on the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks.
On Feb. 3, the Tomahawks will also honor Johnstown's hockey past by wearing special "Johnstown Red Wings" jerseys.
The organization also announced that on Saturday, January 26, the team will honor former Johnstown Jets star Jimmy Mair.
Tickets can be purchased on the Tomahawks' website.
