Hero Rescued Elderly Parents From Fast-Moving Fire In Calvert County That Destroyed Home

A man visiting family in Calvert County was able to save his elderly parents from a fast-moving fire that burned an Owings home to the ground on Monday morning.

Shortly before 4:20 a.m. on Jan. 8, crews from the Huntingtown Fire Department were called to the 8000 block of Mt. Harmony Lane, where there was a report of a fire that broke out, tearing through an area home that had three people inside.

The fire, caused by combustibles that were in the area of a wood burning furnace, rapidly spread, but through circumstances surrounding the 88-year-old homeowner's health, their guardian angel happened to be there to make the save for the McPeak family.

"My girlfriend’s father had spent the night at her grandparents house due to a recent medical mishap with his 88-year-old father," Dawson Jewell said. "My girlfriend’s father, grandfather, and grandmother were all asleep in the house when they were woken up by smoke and fire.

"My girlfriend’s father was able to get everyone out of the house safely."

The fire caused an estimated $350,000 in damages, and completely destroyed everything inside.

Now, friends of the McPeak family are looking for the community's assistance in rebuilding from the ground up.

"The grandparents lost everything. Clothes, food, medicine. Every necessity they need was all destroyed in the fire," the organizer of a GoFundMe campaign wrote. "I’m asking to consider donating to help provide them with at least food and clothes.

"I’m not one to ask for charity or donations," Jewell continued. "I know they wouldn’t want to ask for financial help themselves but for the sake of their families wellbeing they definitely need it."

Those interested in assisting the McPeak family can do so here.
