20 'Fast Charlie' (2023)

The comedic duo of Omar and Roger is highly engaging to watch on screen, as they continue to get into various hijinks and awkward situations in their strange new lives. The film acts less like a standard gangster film, but instead, a hilarious comedy where gangster movie characters are forced into peaceful and uneventful lives, yet hate every second of it.

Villain is a British action crime film that follows Eddie Franks (Craig Fairbrass), a man who has spent the last 10 years behind bars and is attempting to spend his new life as a freeman without resorting to his old ways. However, he soon learns that while he was in jail, his drug-mule brother has gotten into massive debt, forcing Eddie into the crossfire of his brother's predicament. For one final time, Eddie is forced to harness his aggressive, villainous ways to stop the mobsters from destroying his brother's life.
It's rare for a gangster film to have as much distinct, British charm and wit as shown in Villain, a unique style that helps distinguish it from other contemporary gangster films. The movie doesn't shy away from many brutal fight scenes that show off the destructive and chaotic nature of its lead, brought together by an exceptional lead performance by Fairbrass. While the film's plot doesn't exactly stray too far away from the classic conventions of gangster films and action crime films, its tight execution makes it a compelling and exciting watch.

While it would be difficult for an individual film to live up to the insurmountable legacy of The Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark acts as a satisfying origin story and love letter for die-hard fans. It's especially enthralling to watch Michael Gandolfini portray a young version of the character that his late father brought to life so many years ago. While the film may not necessarily hold a lot of water for people who haven't seen The Sopranos, it's certainly a must-watch for fans of the series.

The film acts as a satisfying finale to the Equalizer series and the character of Robert McCall as a whole, leaving in a glorious and violent fashion.

What makes The Tax Collector especially noteworthy and memorable however are the distinct and powerful performances that come from Soto and LaBeouf, who elevate the film during its greatest and most tense moments.

Its shorter runtime gives it an effective pace that keeps the audience engaged throughout, as it doesn't make an effort to delve into deeper aspects than simply having a lot of fun with its action comedy premise. Especially for those who are looking for a fun, light watch out of their modern gangster films, it's difficult to find a worse choice than High Heat.
10 'The Highwaymen' (2019)

Movie audiences are familiar with the famous gangster story of Bonnie and Clyde, but in The Highwaymen, viewers see it from another perspective – that of the Texas Rangers called out of retirement to track down the couple after they escape from jail. The film, released on Netflix, boasts a cast including Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson, and Kathy Bates.
The film received mixed reviews, but critics praised the acting of the cast. Indeed, The Highwaymen is a fun watch, particularly because of Harrelson’s performance and chemistry with Costner. Bates, as always, is also a delight to watch. When you have so many legends not commonly associated with the gangster genre brought together in an interesting and engaging way, it's hard not to get wrapped up in the excitement and drama of it all.

Part of what is able to make the nightmarish experience work so well is Tom Hardy's lead performance in Capone, as he is able to capture the never-ending downward mental spiral with such gravitas and force.

It soon becomes apparent that Marla's latest victim is the mother of a dangerous crime lord, putting her petty fraud crime directly up against the mafia itself.
I Care a Lot is easily one of the most unique modern takes on a crime story, with its willingness to embellish and glorify the depraved and disgusting actions of its main characters in a satirical nature. It takes a lot to make a group of characters and a level of crime that feels viciously on par with the mafia in terms of scope and corruption, yet Pike's lead performance does wonders in setting up the world and stakes of the film.

Nobody is much more action-oriented than the standard gangster film, but the proceedings are still highly satisfying to watch a normal unassuming guy take down an entire gangster underground by himself. Odenkirk works perfectly for the role and tone, as Nobody constantly balances the harsh and gritty realities of the dark underworld at play with the inherent comedy of the man at the center of it all being an unassuming normal guy.

The vicious businessmen soon take it upon themselves to begin murdering the Osage people one by one to take the land and money for themselves, forcing the FBI to step in and investigate.
Many of Martin Scorsese's previous films have made a point to glorify and lambast the process of the mafia and organized crime, making for fun and exhilarating stories that have redefined the mafia in the eyes of the public. Killers of the Flower Moon, however, has no such glorification and glossing-over of these heinous actions, and though its slow burn makes it incredibly apparent just how vile and pure evil these actions truly are. It makes for one of the most powerful and dynamic pieces of self-reflection and evolution in the world of film, and conversely acts to elevate every previous Scorsese film in the process.

The final result is a gangster film that isn't afraid to hold its punches and brings the audience along to embark on its quest through the darkest shadows and back.
